Equipment & Clothing

Students should wear their Rising Phoenix academy training top and loose shorts (MMA or Muay Thai style is recommended) or comfortable leggings/jogging bottoms. Please avoid anything with zips.

Students will need their own boxing gloves and shin guards once they sign up for membership.

Please speak to Coach Ellz if you would like advice on which to buy.

We recommend the following weights based on age:

Ages 7-11: 4oz, 6oz or 8oz

Ages 12-16: 8oz, 10oz or 12oz

Students will train bare foot.

Sessions

Students should bring a water bottle and there is access to tap water to refill this as needed.

The sessions will be 60 minutes and will follow a loose structure of:

Warm up & stretching
Strength & conditioning
Technical striking
Pad work
Games
Sparring
Cool Down

Classes are held in the Johnson Hall which is behind the main community centre building.

Access is via Wordsworth Avenue which is a one-way road.

There is ample free parking.

The are toilets and a small kitchenette available for use.

Parents are welcome to drop off their children or stay and watch.

FAQs

Is it full contact?

Yes, students will be trained to participate in 'sparring' sessions where they will engage in direct physical contact with controlled punches and kicks, under the close supervision of the coaches.

What training/certifications do you have?

Head Coach Ellz has the following certifications:

Instructor qualification from the British Martial Arts & Boxing Association - Level 2
Black Belt in Kyokushin Karate
Personal Training qualification - Level 3
First Aid for Martial Arts - BMABA
Safeguarding for Martial Arts - BMABA

As well as extensive experience coaching martial arts to children & adults and competing at a national level over the past 10 years.

Are all the coaches DBS registered?

Yes, Head Coach Ellz is also a senior leader of a school in his day job and has extensive experience managing safeguarding at the highest level.
